How to Verify Employment via UAN (EPFO)
Use the EPFO Universal Account Number to confirm where someone works and their employment history — for lending and background verification.
The EPFO Universal Account Number (UAN) is the single thread that ties a salaried employee's provident-fund accounts across every job they have held. That makes it one of the cleanest ways to verify employment and income signals for lending, background checks and tenant screening.
Step 1 — Find the UAN
You rarely start with the UAN itself. You can resolve it from the employee's mobile number (Mobile to UAN) or from their PAN (PAN to UAN):
POST https://api.bilapi.com/v1/mobile-to-uan
X-Bilapi-Api-Key: <your_api_key>
Content-Type: application/json
{
"mobile_number": "9876543210"
}{
"status_code": 200,
"success": true,
"data": {
"pf_uan": "101667814011"
}
}Step 2 — Pull the employment history
With the UAN, the Employment History API returns the list of employers, member IDs and joining/exit dates — and can deliver a downloadable PDF report for your file.
- Employer names across the career.
- Member IDs and establishment details.
- Joining and exit dates per employer.
- A downloadable, optionally branded PDF report.
Where it is used
- Lending — confirm stable employment and tenure before a personal or salary loan.
- Background verification — validate a candidate's claimed work history.
- Tenant and gig onboarding — a quick employment signal.
